What are the Enneagram Instincts?

Your friend resonates with being an Enneagram Type 3 and so do you….however you feel you are two very different people.

There are many factors that could contribute to this, one being that you may have different instincts.

There are 3 Enneagram Instincts:

  1. Self Preservation (SP)

  2. One-on-one (SX)

  3. Social (SO)

Self Preservation SP

  • Focus their behaviour on safety and security concerns, they avoid danger, require basic structure and ensuring they have enough resources.

  • They are driven by looking after self and ensuring they get what they need

  • They notice their physical environment and practical realties

  • Some may see the SP as 'selfish' ensuring their needs are met, however they care for others in practical ways.

One on One SX

  • Focus their behaviour on impacting their environment through intense experiences and relationships with specific people.

  • They are driven by connecting with others in a 1 to 1 nature, seeking intensity and following what lights them up

  • They notice interpersonal relationships, energy and meaning.

  • Some refer to one on one as sexual, not necessarily in sexual intimacy however more so for their desire for intense experiences and personal connections of all kinds.

Social SO

  • Focus a person on their status, hierarchy and belonging in social groups and communities.

  • They are driven by fitting into the group and navigating the system

  • They notice group norms, dynamics and hierarchy in communities

  • Some think that social means they are social or extroverted by nature, however they are more about fitting in relative to others within a group.
